Painter and Inventor Philipp Josef Daum was born and grew up in Neheim-Hüsten, now Arnsberg in the Sauerland region. Between 1986 and 1992, he studied in Cologne and Rosenheim. During the course of his professional and artistic development, he lived and worked in various locations in Germany – including Rosenheim, the Lower Rhine region, Berlin, Kulmbach, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Füssen, and Saarland. Today, he lives and works in the Warendorf-Sassenberg region of North Rhine-Westphalia, where his studio is also located. Philipp J. Daum is an engineer, inventor, and artist. His technical training and inventive spirit shape his work as much as his artistic sensibility. This combination of analytical thinking and creative intuition is a common thread throughout his entire work. In addition to his artistic work, Daum is known as the inventor of several technical developments. Among other things, he is the inventor of an MRI-compatible heart phantom, which is used in medical technology. He has also developed an innovative coupling system for attaching pictures and frames. This system enables simple, secure, and flexible installation of pictures on ceilings, sloped walls, and walls. It offers decisive advantages, especially for artists: works can be used as interchangeable frames using the same frame and installed connector. Furthermore, the system allows for direct work on the pre-mounted stretcher frame on the wall – a solution that uniquely combines studio practice, presentation, and functionality. His artistic work moves between the tensions between structure and atmosphere, nature and urbanity, materiality and color. Philipp Daum works with oil, acrylic, airbrush, and shellac on canvas or plywood, frequently incorporating natural materials such as leaves, grasses, seeds, or fine particles into his works. These are incorporated into the picture surface with precise craftsmanship and experimental openness, creating relief-like structures and vibrant textures. The content of his works reflects themes such as nature, space, time, transience, and social observations. The range extends from tranquil, atmospheric landscapes and water scenes to complex cityscapes and sociocritical motifs. Representational and abstract elements merge into his own, distinctive visual language. Daum's works are characterized by the deliberate design of surfaces. Color, material, and structure enter into a dialogue in which each layer and each detail takes on meaning. His paintings are not just visual compositions, but tactile experiences – they invite the viewer to perceive depth and movement beyond mere sight. The interplay of engineering genius and artistic freedom makes Philipp Josef Daum an exceptional figure in contemporary art. His works combine technical precision with emotional expressiveness, craftsmanship with vision, and material research with aesthetic sensitivity. Self-portrait with airbrush, October 2025 Philipp J. Daum's works are technically sound, aesthetically distinctive, and thematically diverse. They appeal to both the eye and the emotions—ideal for collectors, galleries, or art-loving visitors who want to experience not only form and color but also materiality and content.
